# Cursor vs Claude Code

This is a comparison of two terminal-and-editor coding tools written from
hands-on use of both, not from marketing pages. The short version: **Cursor
is an editor with an agent built in; Claude Code is an agent that happens to
live in a terminal.** Both are good. They suit different workflows, and the
difference shows up in how each one handles MCP servers and connected apps.

## What Cursor does well

Cursor is a VS Code fork with AI baked into the editing surface. The
practical wins:

- **Inline edit suggestions** — accept or reject a diff with one keystroke.
  For small mechanical edits, this is faster than a chat round trip.
- **Tab completion** — multi-line completions that are genuinely useful.
- **A GUI for everything** — file trees, diffs, settings panels, extension
  management. If you prefer pointing and clicking, Cursor's surface beats a
  terminal.
- **Agent mode with context** — `Tab`-driven agentic edits that respect your
  editor's open files and selection.

## What Claude Code does well

Claude Code is a CLI agent. The practical wins:

- **Terminal-native** — it lives where git, tests, and deploys live. A
  workflow like "run the tests, fix the failures, commit" stays in one
  place.
- **Strong agentic loop** — long multi-file tasks with checkpoints,
  retries, and permission prompts that are granular enough to trust.
- **MCP config via `claude mcp add`** — one command, no JSON editing.
- **Works over SSH and in CI-like environments** — anywhere you can run a
  shell, you can run Claude Code.

## The MCP story, side by side

Both tools read the same MCP servers. The difference is configuration:

## Which one should you pick?

Choose **Cursor** if you live in an editor and want AI woven into the
editing surface — inline suggestions, GUI diffs, and agentic edits within
your existing VS Code workflow.

Choose **Claude Code** if your work is terminal-shaped — git-heavy,
script-driven, multi-file refactors, or remote sessions. The agentic loop is
the strongest part of it, and MCP setup is a command rather than a config
file.

Most people who try both end up using both: Cursor for interactive editing,
Claude Code for long-running agent tasks. The connected-app layer works the
same in either — one login, the same catalog, the same tools.
