What Membrane actually is

Membrane is an agentic integration platform: an AI agent writes, tests, and maintains integrations for you. Their pitch is "any app, unlimited" — if an API exists, Membrane's agent can build a connector to it, and it self-heals when the API changes.

Their real strengths:

  • AI-generated connectors — connect to APIs that have no pre-built catalog entry, in minutes rather than weeks.
  • A universal data layer — build once, apply across a category of apps.
  • Real self-hosting — cloud, private cloud, and on-premises.
  • Case studies with numbers — Dialpad (8x faster, 274 actions across 12 apps), Hireology (12 weeks to 6 hours), Sequence, Storyblok.

Their honest tradeoffs:

  • Depth is uneven by design. AI-generated connectors are broad but shallow; Membrane themselves note some apps still need manual review. For the common apps, a hand-curated connector is usually more reliable than one generated on the fly.
  • It's infrastructure, not an end-user product. You still build the connection UI, onboarding, and per-user mapping — the same "last mile" problem as Composio.
  • You're running an AI agent that maintains your connectors. That is the point, but it is also a dependency: your integration layer now has an AI in its critical path.

What Composio actually is

Composio is pre-built integration infrastructure: 1,000+ apps, 20,000+ tool actions, SDKs (Python, TypeScript), a Universal CLI, MCP servers, and managed OAuth. It is the widest catalog in the category.

Their real strengths:

  • Breadth you can count on. 980+ toolkits, each with documented tools and schemas. If it's in the catalog, it works without an agent writing it.
  • Serious developer ergonomics. SDKs, CLI, MCP, REST API, sandboxed execution, audit trails, SOC 2 + ISO 27001.
  • The framework ecosystem. Adapters for LangChain, CrewAI, AutoGen, LlamaIndex, Vercel AI SDK, and MCP clients from Claude Code to Cursor.

Their honest tradeoffs:

  • Catalog-limited. If the app isn't in the catalog, you wait or write a custom toolkit yourself.
  • BYO OAuth in production. Composio's docs are explicit: for production use you must provide your own OAuth credentials. The managed-OAuth story is real for prototyping and thinner in production.
  • Developer-first. The same last-mile problem: you build the user-facing connection layer.
